Dr. Guneet Kaur is an Assistant Professor in Biological Engineering at the School of Engineering, University of Guelph. Before joining University of Guelph in 2023, she held faculty positions at York University (Canada) and Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU, Hong Kong). She received her PhD in Biochemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India. Thereafter, she did her postdoctoral research at the University of Westminster, London (UK) and City University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong) before joining HKBU as assistant professor under HKBU Talent 100 programme. She is the recipient of several awards and fellowships including the ICMR Doctoral Fellowship, Government of India (2008 – 2013); FRQNT Postdoctoral Merit Fellowship, Canada (2014); Top Cited Article Award, Elsevier (2014); and Best Poster Award, Elsevier (2018).
Over the last 14 years, Dr. Kaur has invested research efforts in microbial biosystems engineering, bioreactor processes and modelling, meta-omics technologies, and resource and waste management for bio-industrial manufacturing of high-value products, biomedical and bio-health, and environmental applications, and development of sustainable circular bioeconomy. The research is directly related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically SDG 7, 9, 11, and 13. To achieve these goals, she designs transformative and advanced bioengineered processes for sustainable production of biochemicals, biopharmaceuticals and biotherapeutics, agri-bioinoculants, biomaterials, and clean energy generation.
In addition to research, Dr. Kaur also focusses on the design and implementation of universal design for learning (UDL) approaches including experiential and technology-enabled learning in bioengineering. She has also published two books on sustainable waste management and circular economy published by Elsevier and Wiley.
School of Engineering
School of Engineering at Guelph is unique as it offers an integrated and interdisciplinary engineering learning where students have the opportunity to combine concepts from across seven engineering majors and create innovative and sustainable solutions to solve the problems of 21st century. As a part of the Biological Engineering program, Dr. Kaur focusses on providing key competencies in biochemical engineering, bioprocess design, microbial biosystems, and biomanufacturing to undergraduates. At the graduate level, advanced concepts and skills in biomanufacturing and process design of biologics and biopharmaceuticals are taught by her. Taken together, the undergraduates and graduates from the Biological Engineering program of Guelph are equipped to undertake innovative research and industry roles and contribute to improving life of people in Canada and across the world.
